A few historic neighborhoods…

Old North Durham is considered a historic neighborhood dating back to 1901. In the late 20th century, the neighborhood went through a transition as many of the old homes were converted into apartments and rental properties. Today, the neighborhood is being revitalized as many young families are restoring the old homes to updated single-family homes with modern conveniences.

Morehead Hill was the home of many of Durham’s earliest industrialists. While many of the early mansions were torn down in the late 20th century, several great examples of Colonial Revival, Queen Anne, and Bungalow style housing still line the streets.

The Fayetteville Street neighborhood was once one of the most popular neighborhoods in Southeast Durham. It also served as the home of many African-American professionals, businessmen, and professors at what is now North Carolina Central University. Many of the homes were built between the 1920s and the 1940s. Bungalows and revival style housing characterize the neighborhood.

Forrest Hills contains some of the earliest houses in Durham and is considered a popular family neighborhood. Today, Colonial, Tudor, and English Cottage style homes line elegantly winding streets shaded by huge hardwood trees.

Hope Valley was the City's first full-fledged country club suburb, developed around an 18-hole golf course in the late 1920s. The homes in this community are an eclectic mix of revival styles popular in the 1920s and 1930. Tudor, English Cottage, Colonial, Norman Provincial, and even Spanish houses set alongside winding, narrow roads and hilly terrain.

The Southside/St. Theresa neighborhood remains a proud working class African American community with strong ties to the community. Many of its residents are employed with Durham’s major employers. The community also boasts a number of artisans, craftsmen, and teachers.
