Recreation and Leisure
The Jordan Lake Wetlands/State Recreation Area offers five impoundment areas ranging from 50 to 2,000 acres. It’s a great place for birdwatching and provides a habitat for waterfowl including ducks and Canadian geese.
If you’d rather shoot then watch, then the Game Land Reserve may be more your style. A 40,626 acres hunting reserve stretching through Chatham, Durham, Orange and Wake counties, it includes various game species such as fox, dove, quail, rabbit, squirrel, raccoon, deer, turkey, waterfowl and warm-water fish.
Spectator sports are plentiful. Durham is home to the Durham Bulls International League baseball team. Duke University offers 26 NCAA Division I sporting teams and competes in the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), while North Carolina Central University offers NCAA Division II sporting teams.
